The 1 oz American Gold Eagle is among the most popular gold bullion coin in the United States. In 1986, the United States Mint introduced the American Gold Eagle series, minted in four sizes (1 oz, ½ oz, ¼ oz and 1/10 oz). From 1986 through 1991 the US Mint dated the coins using Roman Numerals. From 1992 through the present traditional  Arabic Numerals are featured.

The front of the Gold American Eagle, often referred to as the obverse, features a widely recognized depiction of Liberty taken from the famous $20 "Walking Liberty" gold piece (1907-1933) designed by Augustus Saint-Gaudens. The same design was featured on the $20 St Gaudens Walking Liberty gold coin.

The back, or reverse of the coin, features a family of eagles with the male returning to the nest with an olive branch grasped in his talons. The reverse engravings include the words "United States of America", "E Pluribus Unum" (from many, one).

Additional inscriptions include "In God We Trust", the coin's weight (one oz fine gold) and the face value ($50 USD).

One ounce American Gold Eagles have a $50 face value, which is labeled on the reverse also shows the United States motto. Other engravings show that each coin contains 1 oz fine gold.

The legal tender value that is shown on the Gold Eagle 1 oz coin is symbolic. The intrinsic value of the American Gold Eagle 1 oz fluctuates directly with the price of gold.
