The US Mint began producing the American Eagle series beginning in 1986. These investment-grade bullion coins can provide a reliable and stable store of wealth.
The obverse of the features the well known likeness of Lady Liberty that was sculpted by Augustus Saint-Gaudens for the $20 Double Eagle that was minted from 1907 until 1933.
Liberty is walking forwards with rays of the rising sun rising behind her. She holds in one hand, an olive branch and in the other her torch.
The outer edge of the coin is encircled with fifty stars along with "LIBERTY" and the year of minting.
From 1986 through 1991 the date shown on the coins used Roman Numerals. In 1992, a change was made to use the familiar Arabic numerals.
Up until 2021 the reverse of the coin features a family of eagles. The male is depicted as returning to the nest with an olive branch grasped in his talons.
The Type 2 reverse design was introduced mid-year in 2021. It features a close up portrait of the face and head of a bald eagle.
The reverse engravings include the words "United States of America", "E Pluribus Unum" which is latin for "from many, one".
Additional inscriptions include "In God We Trust", the coin's weight (one oz fine gold) and legal tender face value ($50 USD).
