1 oz American Gold Eagle

The 1 oz American Gold Eagle Coin is the best selling bullion investment coin that is issued annually by the US Mint. Minted of 22k, each coin contains 1 troy ounce of 99.9% pure gold that is alloyed with a small amount of copper and silver for strength, color and durability.

The US Mint began producing the American Eagle series beginning in 1986 to provide investors with an investment-grade bullion coin as a reliable, stable and trusted store of wealth.

When shopping for gold coins, dealers that are offering from a selection of random years are most often available at the best price when compared with current year issues. These coins are typically from the secondary market and can be a mix of years based on what is available through the wholesale markets and through dealer buy backs.

Random Year 1 oz Gold American Eagle Coin Highlights:

  • Minted with one troy ounce of .999 fine gold.
  • 22 karat Gold alloy with 3% Silver and 5.33% Copper.
  • Obverse: Lady Liberty proudly representing peace and freedom.
  • Reverse: May include Type 1 or Type 2 reverse designs.
  • Produced at various US Mint facilities including Philadelphia, West Point and San Francisco.
  • Face Value of $50 USD.

Due to the nature of the bullion market, you will often find lower premiums on secondary market Gold Eagles than current year coins.

Why buy 1 oz Gold Eagles?

Random year Gold Eagle coins are typically from the secondary market and often carry a lower premium over spot price than current year coins. These coins have been previously traded or circulated since the time they were newly minted. Often, these are coins from recent large mintage years.

The American Eagle gold coin is issued by the US Mint as a trusted bullion investment vehicle and as a store of value and wealth. In addition to the 1 troy ounce denomination, fractional sizes are also available with weights of  ½ oz, ¼ oz and 1/10 troy ounce for investors with varying price points and budgets.

Gold Eagle Coin Design

The obverse features the well known likeness of Lady Liberty sculpted by Augustus Saint-Gaudens for the $20 Double Eagle that was minted from 1907 until 1933.

Liberty is walking forward with rays of the sun rising behind her on the horizon. In one hand, she holds an olive branch that is extended as an offering of peace. In her other hand, she holds a torch that is symbolic of guiding people towards the light of enlightenment, liberty and freedom.

The outer edge of the coin is encircled with fifty stars representing each of the states. The word "LIBERTY" is inscribed along the top edge.

From 1986 through 1991 the date were shown in Roman Numerals. In 1992, a change was made to use the familiar Arabic numerals.

Up until 2021 the reverse of the coin features a family of eagles. The male is depicted as returning to the nest with an olive branch grasped in his talons.

The Type 2 reverse design was introduced mid-year in 2021. It features a close up portrait of the face and head of a bald eagle.

The reverse engravings include the words "United States of America", "E Pluribus Unum" which is latin for "from many, one".

Additional inscriptions include "In God We Trust", the coin's weight (one oz fine gold) and legal tender face value ($50 USD).
