This gold coin contains 1.000 troy ounces of bullion. Based on the metal content and weight, the intrinsic melt value of one 1 oz American Gold Eagle is $2171.90 based on today's gold spot price.
The Gold Eagle is the best selling bullion investment coin that is issued annually by the US Mint. Minted of 22k, each coin contains 1 troy ounce of 99.9% pure gold that is alloyed with a small amount of copper and silver for strength and durability.
The US Mint began producing the American Eagle series beginning in 1986 to provide investors with an investment-grade bullion coin as a reliable and stable store of wealth.
Due to the nature of the bullion market, the premiums on secondary market Gold Eagle coins are most often than current year coins. Buying Gold Eagles from the secondary market is a great way to save on the high premiums of current year coins.
Random year Gold Eagle coins often carry a lower premium over spot price than current year coins. Secondary market coins have been previously traded or circulated since the time they were newly minted. Often, these are coins from recent mintage years when a large amount of coins were issed by the mint and entered circulation.
The American Eagle gold coin is issued by the US Mint as a trusted bullion investment vehicle. These coins are available in 1 troy ounce as well as fractional sizes of ½ oz, ¼ oz and 1/10 troy ounce for investors looking for practical options with various price points and budgets.
The obverse of the features the well known likeness of Lady Liberty that was sculpted by Augustus Saint-Gaudens for the $20 Double Eagle that was minted from 1907 until 1933.
Liberty is walking forward with rays of the sun rising behind her on the horizon. She holds in one hand, an olive branch extended as an offering of peace and in the other her torch guiding the people towards the light of enlightment and freedom.
The outer edge of the coin is encircled with fifty stars representing each of the states. The word "LIBERTY" is inscribed along the top edge.
From 1986 through 1991 the date shown on the coins used Roman Numerals. In 1992, a change was made to use the familiar Arabic numerals.
Up until 2021 the reverse of the coin features a family of eagles. The male is depicted as returning to the nest with an olive branch grasped in his talons.
The Type 2 reverse design was introduced mid-year in 2021. It features a close up portrait of the face and head of a bald eagle.
The reverse engravings include the words "United States of America", "E Pluribus Unum" which is latin for "from many, one".
Additional inscriptions include "In God We Trust", the coin's weight (one oz fine gold) and legal tender face value ($50 USD).
