Saint Gaudens $20 Gold Coin (1907-1933) Double Eagle

Double Eagle $20 Gold Coin - Saint Gaudens (1907-1933)

The St-Gaudens Double Eagle is not only a piece of monetary history but also a work of art, capturing the spirit and optimism of the early 20th-century United States. Its beauty and historical significance make it a cornerstone in many coin collections and investment portfolios.

President Theodore Roosevelt felt that U.S. coinage had become bland and undesirable. He had a desire to beautify U.S. coinage and believed that Augustus Saint-Gaudens was the man who could help him. The Saint-Gaudens $20 gold coin was the result.

Gold Double Eagles were minted from 1907-1933. The have a face value of $20 USD and used for transaction before the $20 bill. Today, they are still considered legal currency, though the intrinisic and numismatic value far exceed that.

During the height of the depression, Franklin Roosevelt made it illegal for citizens to own gold coins and minting of the St Gaudens Gold Double Eagle ceased. All Gold coins were ordered to be sold back to the U.S. Treasury and exchanged for $20 Federal Reserve Notes. Millions were melted and then cast into Gold bars which have been sitting in Fort Knox for 90 years.

The obverse of the coin features a full-length image of Lady Liberty holding a torch in her right hand and an olive branch in her left. She is shown walking forward against a backdrop of the sun's rays with the U.S. Capitol Building in the distance. The inscription "LIBERTY" appears above, with the date below.

The reverse features a majestic flying eagle against the sun's rays. The inscriptions "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "TWENTY DOLLARS" appear on the reverse. From 1908 onward, the motto "IN GOD WE TRUST" was added below the sun, following public outcry over its initial omission.

Each Gold Double Eagle coin contains .9675 troy ounces of gold and St Gauden's gold coins are highly sought after by both collectors and investors.

Because of its beauty, history, and demand among collectors, the St-Gaudens Double Eagle often commands a premium over its gold content. Rare dates, high-grade specimens and coins with particular historical provenance can fetch significantly higher prices than the value of the gold they contain.

Investing in tangible assets like gold coins can offer diversification for investors. Precious metals often move counter to the stock market, providing a potential hedge during economic downturns.
