This gold coin contains 1.000 troy ounces of bullion. Based on the metal content and weight, the intrinsic melt value of one Krugerrand 1 oz Gold Coin Random Year is $2172.30 based on today's gold spot price.
The Krugerrand was the first investment-grade gold coin for investors as a trusted store of value. The design has remained virtually unchanged since its introduction in 1967.
The Krugerrand has a 57 year mintage history, making it one of the most recognizable modern gold bullion coins. Arguably, this is one of the most liquid gold investments due to the wide availability of Krugerrand 1 oz gold coins on the secondary market.
Secondary market Krugerrand 1 oz gold coins carry a lower premium compared to newly minted coins.
The Krugerrand 1 oz gold coin is an ideal way for investors of all types that are looking to buy gold coins. These coins can be a good choice for diversifying a portfolio that may be heavy in assets with short term volatility.
As a store of value, the 1 oz Gold Krugerrand price is directly tied to the current gold price. Buying secondary market Krugerrand gold coins is also a way to save on higher dealer premiums of the current year coins.
Krugerrand Design
The obverse features a portrait that honors Paul Kruger, the former South African President and notable politician who helped to bring independence to the country.
The reverse depicts a springbok antelope, a national symbol of South Africa. This side also includes inscriptions to identify the year of minting, along with the words "Krugerrand" and "Fyngoud 1 oz Fine Gold".
This coin has no nominal face value. Its legal tender status in South Africa is based solely on its intrinsic gold content.
Each Krugerrand is minted with exactly one troy ounce (31.1035 grams) of pure gold, but is alloyed with copper for a total gross weight of 33.93 grams.
The strength of the alloy provides durability and gives the Krugerrand its distinctive, slightly reddish hue. The luster is enchanting and it is one of the things differentiating this coin from the others.
Krugerrand History
Initially intended as an investment vehicle to promote the private ownership of precious metals, the Gold Krugerrand was first minted in 1967 by the South African Mint.
Made from an alloy of gold and copper metals, the 1 oz Krugerrand gold coin has gross weight of 1.0909 troy oz (33.933 grams) and contains one full troy ounce of pure gold by weight.
Sanctions were imposed on South African goods during the 1970s and 1980s, due to their political policies of Apartheid.
In 1985, the Comprehensive Anti-Apartheid Act was introduced, which, among other things, banned the import of Krugerrands into the U.S. beginning in 1986.
For a period from 1986 until the 1990s, economic sanctions prevented the import of these coins. The ban on owning Krugerrand coins was lifted after the end of apartheid policies.
South African Mint
The South African Mint is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the South African Reserve Bank, the country's central bank. The mint's state-of-the-art facility in Centurion includes coin presses, a research and development unit, and a numismatic department. The mint also has a visitor center where the public can learn about the minting process and the history of South African coins.
