British Half Sovereign Gold Coin

A half sovereign is a British gold coin with a legal tender denomination of 1/2 pound. It is also sometimes referred to as a half-sov or a half sovereign sovereign.

The original full sovereign is a well-known British gold coin with a face value of one sovereign pound, or £1. The half sovereign is simply half of that value, making it worth 10 shillings, or half a pound. It carries the same design as the full sovereign, featuring the reigning British monarch on the obverse (front) and the traditional St. George and the Dragon design on the reverse (back), but has a smaller diameter and slightly thinner thickness.

The first half sovereign was issued in 1544 during the reign of King Henry VIII. However, it wasn't until 1817, during the reign of King George III, that the half sovereign became a regular issue coin. Since then, it has been minted in various years and has seen a variety of different monarchs on the obverse.

British Half Sovereign Gold Coin Details:

  • 22 karat with a purity of 91.67% pure gold.
  • 0.1177 troy ounce, 3.99 grams.
  • Obverse: Varies depending of year of minting.
  • Reverse: Rendition of St. George mounted on horseback slaying a dragon, designed by Benedetto Pistrucci.
  • Issued by The Royal Mint and backed by the British Government.

In addition to their gold content, some half sovereigns also carry numismatic value. Older or rarer half sovereigns may command higher prices among collectors, particularly if they are in excellent condition or have unique historical significance.

Half sovereigns are recognized worldwide as a form of legal tender, although their actual face value is significantly lower than their intrinsic and numismatic value. The value of a half sovereign is based primarily on the gold content as since these were minted for circulation during the time of the gold standard.

They are sought after by gold investors and collectors as a way to diversify their portfolios, preserve wealth, and enjoy the beauty and history associated with these iconic British coins.

Some from Queen Victoria's reign feature a crowned shield. Minted at the British Royal Mint and other Commonwealth Mints.
