Gold Sovereign Queen Victoria

Queen Victoria's reign over the British Empire lasted for sixty four years. The obverse side of the gold sovereign coin had three distinct portraits during that period.

  • Young Victoria - minted between 1838 and 1886
  • Jubilee Victoria - minted between in 1887 and 1893
  • Veiled Head - minted between 1893-1901

The first is a left facing effigy portrait of the Young Victoria. The image was sculpted for coinage shortly after she was crowned queen at 18 years old. The portrait design was created by William Wyon, who was the chief engraver for the Royal Mint from 1828 until his death.

The second is the Jubilee Head Victoria. The image first appeared on the 1887 mintage year to honor her Golden Jubilee, which was a celebration of the fiftieth anniversary of her reign. The Jubilee Head design was created by Joseph Edgar Boehm.

The Veiled Head was the last of the Victoria gold sovereigns. Created by Sir Thomas Brock, the Veiled Head design shows a much older Queen Victoria wearing a veil on her head partially obscuring her crown. Many believe that the design shows the Queen in morning of her late husband, Prince Albert, who died in 1861.

During the Victorian era, the expansion of the British Empire grew throughout Asia and the Pacific. These British gold sovereign coins were minted in various mints under the authority of the Royal Mint.

Mintmarks can be used to identify the location where the coin was first minted.

M - Melbourne
S - Sydney
P - Perth

Coins without a mintmark were created in London. All British sovereigns are legal tender pound coins and are struck in 22ct gold.
