In 1985, the Comprehensive Anti-Apartheid Act was introduced, which, among other things, banned the import of Krugerrands into the U.S. beginning in 1986.
Economic sanctions prevented the import of these coins from 1986 until the 1990s. The ban on owning Krugerrand coins was lifted after the end of apartheid policies.
