From a historical perspective, the Gold Buffalo pays homage to the iconic Buffalo Nickel, also known as the Indian Head Nickel, designed by James Earle Fraser and first minted in 1913. Fraser's design featured the noble Native American profile on the obverse and the majestic American bison on the reverse. The choice to revive this design on a gold coin has both artistic and political implications.
Fraser's iconic image is on the obverse side of this coin was created by combining portraits of three indigenous Native American chiefs. This design first appeared on the 1913 Buffalo Nickel.
The chiefs in the composite portrait are Iron Tail of the Lakota tribe, Two Moons of the Cheyenne tribe and John Big Tree of the Seneca tribe. Fraser combined features from each of the men into the composite design for the coin.
