1938-D Texas Half Dollar

The 1938-D Texas Half Dollar is a commemorative coin the United States Mint issued as part of a series that honored the Texas Centennial (1836-1936), the 100th anniversary of Texas's independence from Mexico.

1938-D Texas Half Dollar Highlights

  • Struck at the Denver Mint.
  • Composed of 90% silver and 10% copper
  • Weighing 12.5 grams, with a diameter of 30.6 mm.

The obverse features an image of the Winged Victory, holding a sword and a shield that displays the Lone Star of Texas. Behind her is an eagle with its wings outspread, symbolizing strength and freedom. Surrounding the image are inscriptions: "THE TEXAS INDEPENDENCE CENTENNIAL" and "LIBERTY."

The reverse design showcases the Alamo. Above the Alamo is the Lone Star, with oak and olive branches surrounding the building. Around the edge, the coin reads "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "HALF DOLLAR," "E PLURIBUS UNUM," and "REMEMBER THE ALAMO."

The 1938-D Texas Half Dollar had a mintage of only 3,780 coins, making it a relatively scarce issue within the series, adding to its collectibility.

The Texas Centennial Half Dollar series was authorized by Congress in 1933. The coin was designed by sculptor Pompeo Coppini and issued each year between 1934 and 1938, with coins struck at the Philadelphia, Denver, and San Francisco Mints.

The 1938-D issue, being from the final year of production, is particularly sought after by collectors due to its limited mintage and its place at the end of the series.
