This gold coin contains 0.50 troy ounces of bullion. Based on the metal content and weight, the intrinsic melt value of one Krugerrand 1/2 oz Gold Coin (Random Year) is $910.20 based on today's gold spot price.
The Krugerrand is the gold bullion coin that was initially created as the first legal tender currency gold coin minted exclusively for investors. The Gold Krugerrand was first minted in 1967 by the South African Mint. The fractional gold coins, such as this 1/2 oz Krugerrand, have been minted annually since 1980.
The coin is minted with a 22 karat alloy of gold and copper metals, giving the Krugerrand its distinct orangish hue. The unique color that these coins reflect is one of the alluring reasons investors seek these tried and true physical assets.
The front and back designs of the 1/2 oz gold Krugerrand shares the same iconic symbolism of other coins in the series.
The obverse features an effigy that honors Paul Kruger, the former President of South Africa who helped to bring the country independence from Britain.
The reverse of the coin features a design intended to stoke the wonders of nature found throughout South Africa. The antelope-like Springbok is a medium-size mammal that is native to the region. The images shows the springbok bounding across a grassy plain.
Inscriptions on this side include the weight "FYNGOUD 1/2 oz FINE GOLD", along with the year-date of minting split between the left and right. The rim around the top edge is inscribed with the legal tender face value "1/2 KRUGERRAND".
Gold Krugerrands are also available in two additional fractional sizes that include 1/10 oz and 1/4 oz weight denominations.
The Krugerrand gold coins are minted and backed by the South African Government and are sovereign investment coins.
Initially intended as an investment vehicle to promote the private ownership of precious metals, the Gold Krugerrand was first minted in 1967 by the South African Mint.
