2023 Royal Arms 1 oz Silver Coin

The Royal Arms is the official emblem used by the British monarchy and other Commonwealth realms to represent the reigning monarch and their royal family. It is a heraldic design that symbolizes the authority and identity of the reigning sovereign and is used on official documents, buildings, currency, and other items associated with the monarchy.

The obverse of the coins features an effigy portrait of His Majesty King Charles III.

The reverse design features Timothy Noad’s skilful reinterpretation of The Royal Arms

The central element of the Royal Arms is a shield divided into four quadrants. Each quadrant represents one of the constituent countries of the United Kingdom: England, Scotland, Ireland, and, more recently, Wales.

The first quadrant features three golden lions passant guardant (walking and facing the viewer) on a red background, representing England.

The second quadrant displays a red lion rampant (standing on its hind legs) on a gold background, symbolizing Scotland.

The third quadrant depicts a golden harp with silver strings on a blue background, representing Ireland.

The fourth quadrant contains a green leek and a purple thistle, symbolizing Wales. This addition was made in 1801, after the Kingdom of Ireland joined the United Kingdom.

Above the shield is a royal crown representing the monarchy, along with a lion statant guardant, a unicorn, and a royal helmet.

Below the shield is the motto "Dieu et mon droit," which is French for "God and my right," signifying the divine authority and hereditary right of the monarch to rule.

The shield is flanked on left side by a crowned lion and a unicorn on the right.
