2023 Britannia 1/2 oz Gold Coin Design

With the recent passing of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, it's uncertain what will happen with the obverse design in the future.

The traditional history of the British monarchy dictates that the reigning ruler appear on the obverse of coinage and currency.

The 2023 Great Britain 1/2 oz Gold Britannia .9999 Fine Coin from the British Royal Mint is enhanced with additional anti-counterfeiting features incorporated into the design elements.

  • The basic Britannia design by Philip Nathan remains the same.
  • The waves in the background field on the reverse reflect and capture the light on the coin’s surface.
  • Smooth, micro-engraved vertical, diagonal, and horizontal lines adorn Britannia’s shield.
  • a holographic image of a padlock in the bottom left, which transitions to a trident as you tilt the coin.

Lastly, the Latin phrase “Decus Et Tutamen” (An ornament and a safeguard) is etched along the inner rim of the coin.

The obverse of the coin features the popular effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II wearing her royal crown and elegant jewelry, designed by artist and engraver Jody Clark.

The reverse showcases the majestic figure of Britannia. Wearing a toga and carrying a large shield, she stands proudly while she wields a trident in her outstretched arm.

Coin Features:

  • Anti-counterfeiting measures introduced into the design and production
  • Minted from .9999 pure gold with a weight of 1/2 troy oz
  • Produced by the British Royal Mint
  • Brilliant Uncirculated Condition
  • Face value of 50 British Pounds
  • Legal tender coin backed by the British Government
  • Obverse: Displays the royal bust of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Inscriptions: “Elizabeth II”, “D.G. REG F.D” (Queen by the Grace of God), and “50 POUNDS”.
  • Reverse: Features the iconic image of Britannia holding a trident in her outstretched hand while holding a shield. Inscriptions: “BRITANNIA”, “2023” along with the weight and purity.
