Rand Refinery
The Rand Refinery was established in 1920 to refine the gold ore that was extracted from the mines. This helped local miners receive a more equitable share of the profits for gold that had previously been sent to London to be refined.
The Rand Refinery is a private company. It is however, established by law that is allowed to manufacture and distribute legal tender coins such as the Krugerrand.
