$10 FV 90% Silver Barber Half Dollars

The Barber Half Dollar, also known as the "Liberty Head Half," was minted from 1892 to 1915. It was part of a series of coins that included the dime and quarter, all designed by Charles E. Barber, the U.S. Mint Chief Engraver at the time.

The Barber Series was a result of a call for new designs for U.S. coinage after a public design competition failed to yield satisfactory alternatives. The design for the Barber Half Dollar, which depicted a bust of Liberty on the obverse and an eagle on the reverse, was not only used for the half dollar but also for the new dime and quarter.

The Barber Design, with its iconic design, remains a treasured collectible among numismatists due to its historical significance. The coin was minted during a period of significant advancements and changes in the U.S., which included the introduction of telephone service between New York and Chicago and the founding of the Coca-Cola Company

Coins during this period were more frequently used in everyday commerce compared to now, and remained in extensive daily transactions for many years. Barber silver halves remained in circulation because of their intrinsic metal value. When silver prices rose in the 1960s and clad coins were introduced, many of these coins were hoarded or melted down.

$10 Face Value Barber Half Dollar Highlights:

  • Contains 20 90% silver half dollars. Some dealers package and ship silver halves in standard bank rolls or tubes, others may ship in a plastic bag.
  • Condition of coins will vary, check dealer listings for details and inventory conditions

One notable key date for Barber Series is the 1903-S Barber Half Dollar. This coin, with a mintage of 1,920,772, is considered remarkable, not only for its scarcity in higher grades, but also for the historical context in which it was minted. Events such as the founding of the Ford Motor Company, the U.S. acquisition of control of the Panama Canal Zone, the inaugural baseball World Series, and the Wright brothers' pioneering flight all took place during this era, giving the coin an added layer of historical significance.

Its design and the circumstances surrounding its creation influenced the way U.S. coins were designed and minted in the early 20th century. The coin's design, with its classical representations of Liberty and the eagle, became a standard for U.S. coinage that is still evident in coin designs today.

The design had a relatively high relief, and along with the placement of its date and other elements, made it susceptible to wear. Given that the newest Barber quarters are over a century old, it is common for coins of this age to show considerable signs of use and aging. Some may have partial dates or no dates.
