2020 Australian 1/4 oz Gold Kangaroo

The ¼ oz 2020 Gold Kangaroo Coin has a limited mintage of only 150,000 coins, but the Perth Mint traditionally only end up minting around 25,000-30,000 per year. This is compared to the 1 oz Kangaroo coin, which technically does have an unlimited mintage but mintage numbers are traditionally around 250,000-300,000 coins for the 1 ounce. These numbers show just how limited the quarter ounce coins are compared to the 1 ounce.

The Gold Australian Kangaroo Coin Series of coins have been minted by Perth since 1986, however originally the coins were known as Australian Gold Nuggets, and the series wasn’t renamed to today’s Kangaroo until 1989.

The Australian Perth Mint was originally founded in 1899 as one of three branches of the British Royal Mint in Australia.Today the Perth Mint remains as the last of these three mints, and is now under the jurisdiction of the Government of Western Australia as of 1970.

The obverse of this Gold Kangaroo Coin showcases the Jody Clark designed side profile of Queen Elizabeth II. The designer’s initials “JC” can be found on Her Majesty’s shoulder. Above the Queen are inscribed the words “ELIZABETH II AUSTRALIA” and below the profile is the monetary denomination of “25 DOLLARS”.

On the reverse of the 2020 ¼ oz Gold Kangaroo is shown a depiction of an adult kangaroo and a joey standing side-by-side on the plains of the Australian Outback, framed on either side by Australian Grass Trees, a common sighting in the outback. Above the kangaroos are inscribed the words “AUSTRALIAN KANGAROO”. Micro-laser engraved within these words are letters, which acts as a high level authentication feature of this coin. These micro-engraved letters are only visible under magnification. Below the Kangaroos are inscribed the text “2020 ¼ oz 9999 GOLD” and next to them you can see the “P” mint mark of the Perth Mint.

By minting the popular Gold Kangaroo series in ¼ oz coins, the Perth Mint has made this an affordable gold bullion option for both collectors and investors alike.
