100 Francs Napoleon III Laurel Wreath Crown
The laurel wreath design type of the Napoleon III 100 Francs gold coin was minted from 1862 until 1869. The coins were minted in far fewer quantities than the small denomination coins. This also means that fewer of these coins were commonly circulated. Condition of most specimens is considered to be above average for gold coins that are more than 150 years old.
The obverse design features the same initial effigy of the emperor that is shown on smaller coins in the series during these years. The bust is of an aging Napoleon III with a laurel wreath on his head. The image was sculpted and designed by Desire-Albert Barre and is enlarged to show greater detail in his hair and of the laurel wreath.
The reverse shows the coat of arms design in the center. Above the crest, the words "Empire Francais" are inscribed. The year-date of minting is below and the face value amount is shown on either side of the shield.
About the 100 Franc Gold Coin
The first 100 franc gold coin was minted in France in 1801. They were re-issued again in 1848 when the franc was readopted as the national currency. The denomination was reestablished in 1967 for commemorative coins that are issued by the mint.
The gross weight of these coins is 32.2581 grams with approximately .9334 troy ounces of pure gold. The diameter is 35mm and each of these coins has 2.3mm of thickness.
