2024 St. Helena 1 oz Silver Faerie Queene Una & the Lion

One of its most memorable characters from Edmund Spenser's allegorical poem, "The Faerie Queene",  is Una, who represents the "True Church" or the "True Religion" in the allegorical narrative. In Book I, which focuses on the virtue of holiness, Una is accompanied by a lion, which represents reason or natural instinct.

The reverse design of this 1 oz coin features characters and a scene from the 16th century poem, while the obverse displays a portrait of His Majesty King Charles III.

During her search for the Redcrosse Knight, Una is approached by a ferocious lion. Instead of attacking her, the lion is tamed by her purity and innocence and becomes her protector, defending her against various threats. The image of a vulnerable maiden accompanied by a fierce lion is a striking visual contrast and serves to highlight Una's purity, innocence, and the protective power of natural virtue and reason.

In the fable, the lion remains loyal to Una until it meets its tragic end while protecting her from a group of savage beasts.
