Umicore is a multinational company that was originally established in 1805 as a mining company named Union Minière du Haut Katanga. Over the years the company underwent several transformations leading to the Umicore group as it is known today.

Umicore has three main business areas that include catalysis, energy & surface Technologies, and recycling that are all linked by their shared focus on precious metals and other materials.

One of their most prolific product lines includes automotive catalysts used for emission reduction in both gasoline and diesel engines that are manufactured using palladium and other platinum group metals.

The Belgian based company produces investment-grade precious metal products like gold and silver bars, some of which are minted from recycled industrial and downstream waste. Their bars range in size from 1 gram to 1 kilogram. Their gold bars are recognized by the London Bullion Market Association (LBMA) and can be traded worldwide.

The company's Energy & Surface Technologies business unit is involved in the advanced research and manufacturing of thin-film photovoltaics, which use a very thin layer of silver to make electricity from solar energy.
