How we compare prices (Methodology)
  • Data sources: We fetch live pricing from participating dealer product pages and/or APIs.
  • Refresh cadence: Prices and spot updates sync on a schedule (typically every hour). Each page shows a timestamp when the prices were last refreshed.
  • Payment normalization: Rankings default to bank/ACH pricing. Where dealers publish multiple payment prices, you should verify the price on the dealer website based on the selected payment method.
  • All-in price: Due to differences in sales tax, shipping costs and payment method adjustment, we show item price and note what’s included.
  • Premium over spot: Premium = The amount charged by the dealer, minus the current spot per unit for this specific product.
  • Stock handling: Pre-Orders are typically labeled. Sometimes, dealers will list items as in-stock and available for sale when they are on backorder; out-of-stock offers are de-prioritized or hidden.
  • Independence & disclosure: Dealers cannot pay to change rankings. Some outbound links are affiliate/sponsored; they’re marked and use rel="sponsored". This does not affect how prices are displayed.
  • Corrections: See something off? Contact us and we will do our best to fix the issue quickly.

Expert Notes

At one time, Engelhard Corporation was one of the largest precious metals companies in the world and were responsible for the development of many industry advancements in the use of and application of precious metals. The most well-known invention was the development of the catalytic converter that is used to filter exhaust emissions from combustion vehicles.

Engelhard stopped producing silver bars in the 1980's and were then acquired by multi-national conglomerate BASF in 2006, which has put their products in greater demand with investors and collectors.

Vintage Engelhard 1 oz Silver Bar Highlights

  • Contains one troy ounce of .999 pure silver.
  • Obverse: Stamped with logo, weight and purity.
  • Reverse: Varies, but often includes hallmark.
  • Minted in the USA.

Engelhard 1 oz silver bars usually have a simple yet elegant design that often features the Engelhard logo, the weigh, and the purity (.999) stamped on the bar. Some older Engelhard bars may have different designs.

These bars are considered vintage and Engelhard 1 oz Silver Bars are secondary market bars that will probably have some signs of age. This may include some tarnish, minor imperfections or scratches as noted in most dealer listings.

It has been almost 40 years since Englehard stopped minting silver bars and the 1 oz bars continue to become more scarce. These silver bars can be a sound investment for those looking to buy physical silver as a store of value or a hedge against inflation. They offer the benefits of silver ownership, including liquidity, diversification, and long-term wealth preservation. Premiums for Engelhard silver bars continue to rise.
