The Red Dragon of Wales is one of the ten heraldic statues known as the Queen's Beasts that stood guard at Queen Elizabeth II's coronation in 1953. Each Beast, representing a strand of the Queen's ancestry, is a symbol of the various strands of royal lineage brought together in a young woman about to be crowned queen.
The Red Dragon of Wales was originally a symbol of the Welsh King Cadwaladr, who's reign occurred from 655 to 682 AD. The symbol was later adopted by the Tudor dynasty, having had Welsh origins. The Red Dragon is often depicted holding a shield bearing a lion in each quarter of the shield, representing the arms of Llywelyn ap Gruffudd, the last native Prince of Wales.
