The Coronet design of the half eagle gold coin is often referred to as the Liberty Head $5 gold coin because of the design.
The US Mint produced these legal tender gold coins for circulation between 1866 and 1908. They were minted in far greater numbers than any other half eagle coin which makes them an ideal bullion investment coin.
Designed by Christian Gobrecht, the obverse of the coin shows a left facing sculpted image of Lady Liberty surrounded by thirteen stars. The year-date of minting is impressed along the bottom.
The reverse of the coin shows an eagle with wings spread and a shield in front of its chest. His claws are grasping an olive branch in one talon and three arrows in the other.
Each $5 gold half eagle coin is minted with .2419 troy ounces of gold.
