Gold Sovereign Victoria Shield

The Gold Sovereign featuring Victoria Shield is a British coin that has historical significance and is often sought after by collectors.

Shield back Sovereigns were minted between 1838 and 1887, with the exception of 1840, 1867 and 1876. These coins were struck in coin alignment, instead of medal alignment.

The obverse of the coin features a portrait of Queen Victoria. The portrait of Victoria used on the Sovereigns minted from 1838 to 1887 is known as the "Young Head" because it shows Victoria in her youth. This particular design was created by William Wyon, the chief engraver of the Royal Mint at that time.

The reverse of the coin, from which it gets its name "Victoria Shield," depicts a crowned shield. This design was also created by William Wyon and was used on the Sovereigns minted from 1838 to 1887. The shield design is intricate and features the Royal Arms of the United Kingdom.

The full Sovereigns are made from 22 carat gold, weigh approximately 7.98 grams, and contain 0.2354 troy ounces of gold.

The Gold Sovereign Victoria Shield, like other sovereigns, was minted in several locations, including London and Melbourne, which can affect its value and rarity. The mintmark can usually be found on the ground above the date.

The value of this coin can vary widely based on a variety of factors including the coin's condition, its mintmark, and the current market demand for such coins.
