The obverse of the coin features a portrait of Queen Victoria. This particular design was created by William Wyon, the chief engraver of the Royal Mint at that time.
The reverse of the coin, from which it gets its name "Victoria Shield," depicts a crowned shield. This design was also created by William Wyon and was used on the Sovereigns minted from 1838 to 1887. The shield design is intricate and features the Royal Arms of the United Kingdom.
