The United States Mint began issuing the American Gold Eagle series in 1986. As the second smallest of the four sizes of American Gold Eagle coins, the 1/4 oz American Gold Eagles are popular because of their price point and comes with the benefits and security of investing in gold.

Gold Eagle 1/4 oz Design Changes

From 1986 until 1991, the mintage date on the obverse of the coin was displayed in Roman Numerals. The mint made the change to the more familiar Arabic Numerals in 1992 and they continue to be featured in the design.

During the 2021 mintage year, the Mint released the type 2 reverse design that portrays just the face of the fierce eagle with piercing eyes.

On the type 1 coins, the reverse portrays an eagle flying to his nest on the reverse with a family of eagles eagerly awaiting his return.

With the design change occurring mid-year, coins featuring the type 1 design from this year were quickly sold out by the mint and many are in the hands of collectors. Some of these coins may be available in secondary market inventories.

The inscriptions on the reverse include: United States of America, E Pluribus Unum (from many, one) and In God We Trust. The weight (one-quarter oz fine gold) and legal tender value ($10) are also incorporated around the design. 

On the front of the coin is a depiction of Lady Liberty inspired by the Augustus Saint-Gaudens $20 gold piece (1907-1933). A throwback reminder to an era recent history when gold coins were circulating through the economy as real money prior to the government confiscation and seizure of gold in 1933.

The 1/4 ounce Gold Eagle coin is 22 mm in diameter, and the total weight is 8.48 grams gross and allow the opportunity to buy gold coins for just a fraction of the cost of an ounce. These coins are a great choice for stacking because of the affordable price point.
