On October 8,1942, the war time nickel was introduced to eliminate nickel, a critical war material. A larger mint-mark was placed above the dome of Monticello, indicating the change in alloy. Composition: 35% silver, 56% copper, 9% manganese.

War Nickels are an inexpensive way to stack silver. Each Jefferson Nickel from this era was minted with an alloy that contains 35% silver.

Every $1 Face Value (20 coins) of War Nickels contains 1.125 troy ounces of Silver. A full roll of 40 nickels contains $2 Face Value and roughly 2.25 troy ounces of silver.

War Nickels can commonly be bought for their melt value, sometimes even below melt value.

These nickels got their name because the raw materials used in coins were needed for armor plating of tanks in World War II.

These coins were minted until 1945 when the war ended. Metal prices adjusted after the war ended and these coins were saved by citizens because of the metal combination.

Melting these coins is legal, but not really practical because of the other metals in the alloy. These coins are traded only for the intrinsic value.

They are easy to identify from other coins in a pile. The reverse (back) of the coin shows the mint mark in a large, prominent font in the center of the dome on the rear.
