The 20 Francs Napoleon III gold coin was minted from 1861 to 1870, during the reign of Napoleon III. These circulated gold coins were struck during an era that saw increased industrialization throughout France, while simultaneously doubling the size of the French overseas Empire, giving the country two decades of prosperity. During this era more than 86 million 20 Francs coins were minted. 

In circulated condition, the appearance of the 20 Francs Napoleon gold coin can vary greatly depending on its age and the extent of wear. The obverse of the coin typically features a portrait of Napoleon Bonaparte facing to the right with a laureate wreath upon his head. The inscriptions on this side include the name "Napoleon" and the year of minting. There is also a variation of this coin without the wreath adornment.

The reverse side features the Coat of Arms with the imperial eagle in the center. The inscriptions around the top edge of the coin "EMPIRE FRANCAIS",  the denomination "20 Fr" is split to either side of the design on the lower part of the design field, and the mint mark and date can be found below.

Each 20 Franc Gold coin was produced with .1867 troy ounces of gold.
