2017 Queen's Beasts The Dragon 2 oz Silver

The Red Dragon of Wales is one of the ten heraldic statues that stood guard at Queen Elizabeth II's coronation in 1953. Each of the Queen's Beasts represents a strand of the Queen's ancestry and is a symbol of the intertwining families of royal lineage brought together today's Royal Family.

The Red Dragon of Wales was originally a symbol of the Welsh King Cadwaladr, who's reign occurred from 655 to 682 AD. The symbol was later adopted by the Tudor dynasty, having had Welsh origins. The Red Dragon is often depicted holding a shield bearing a lion in each quarter of the shield, representing the arms of Llywelyn ap Gruffudd, the last native Prince of Wales.

The Red Dragon is the third release in the Queens Beasts series from the British Royal Mint. The Red Dragon of Wales is featured on this oversized 2 ounce fine silver coin, which has become popular among both collectors and investors.
