The third Best of the Mint set goes on sale August 6, 2026, at noon EDT, featuring Adolph A. Weinman’s 1916 Walking Liberty half dollar. Among classic U.S. coin designs, few have aged as well or been reproduced as often.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The set pairs a 1\/2 oz .9999 fine gold coin reproducing Weinman’s original design with a 1 oz .999 fine silver medal offering a modern reinterpretation. It is the largest gold coin in the series so far and the last of the three 1916 designs before the program moves to the 1804 silver dollar and the 1907 Saint-Gaudens double eagle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What’s in the Set<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Gold coin<\/strong>: A one-half ounce .9999 fine (24-karat) gold coin reproducing Weinman’s Walking Liberty obverse. Liberty strides toward a rising sun, draped in an American flag, carrying olive branches in her left arm. Inscriptions read “LIBERTY,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and “1916.” The coin carries a Liberty Bell privy mark with the numeral “250” and a W mintmark for West Point. The reverse shows an eagle perched on a rocky mountain crag, wings folded, with “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” and “HALF DOLLAR.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Silver medal<\/strong>: A one-ounce .999 fine silver medal with a modern reinterpretation of Walking Liberty elements. The design treats the obverse and reverse as a continuous scene. The medal is struck at Philadelphia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Original Walking Liberty Half Dollar<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Adolph Weinman designed the Walking Liberty half dollar in 1916 alongside his Mercury dime. Both designs debuted the same year as Hermon MacNeil’s Standing Liberty quarter. All three replaced older designs in a single sweep, giving 1916 one of the strongest design lineups in the history of the U.S. Mint.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Walking Liberty half dollar circulated from 1916 through 1947, when it was replaced by the Franklin half dollar. Key dates for collectors include the 1916-S, the 1921-S, and the 1921-D, all of which carry low mintages and strong premiums in any grade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Weinman’s obverse design got a second life in 1986 when the U.S. Mint adapted it for the American Silver Eagle<\/a> bullion coin. Every Silver Eagle<\/a> struck since then carries Walking Liberty on its obverse. If you own a Silver Eagle, you already own a version of the design this set celebrates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pricing and How to Buy<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Mint has not published the official price yet. At a gold spot price near $4,000, the precious metals pricing matrix puts a 1\/2 oz gold set in the range of $2,800-$3,100. The exact price will be confirmed when the Mint updates the product page (26BM3) closer to August 6.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The set will be available at usmint.gov<\/a> with a household limit of one. Based on the first two sets, the limit will likely be lifted within a day or two of release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At current gold spot prices<\/a>, the melt value of 1\/2 oz of gold is roughly $2,000. The premium above melt covers the silver medal, production costs, and collector markup.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Series Context: How the First Two Sets Performed<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Mercury Dime set (1\/10 oz gold) sold 96% of its 30,000-unit cap within five hours of its June 4 release and is currently unavailable from the Mint. The last listed price was $775 after a gold-driven adjustment from the original $810. Certified sets have traded for $2,000-$2,500 on the secondary market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Standing Liberty Quarter set<\/a> (1\/4 oz gold, $1,540) sold about 14,100 of its 30,000 cap in the first four days after its July 10 release. The slower pace likely reflects the higher price point rather than weaker interest in the design.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Walking Liberty set sits at the midpoint of the series in both gold content (1\/2 oz) and price. It also has the broadest collector base of any design in the program, thanks to the Silver Eagle connection. Bullion stackers who have never bought a numismatic coin still know this design.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
