In their first four days, collectors bought 303,742 coins: 158,647 Morgans and 145,095 Peace dollars. Those numbers make this the strongest opening for the modern Morgan and Peace program since 2023, and they came with a format change that rewrites the comparison.

This is the post-release look at how the 2026 coins performed against the 2023-2025 benchmarks, what early secondary market activity looks like, and how the August 25 Enhanced Uncirculated releases factor into the picture.

The Numbers: 2026 vs. 2023-2025

The 2026 release changed two variables at once: the Mint sold the coins individually instead of as a mandatory two-coin set, and it moved production from San Francisco to Philadelphia. Comparing apples to apples requires accounting for both changes.

Year

Format

Price

Mintage Cap

4-Day Opening

% of Cap

2023-S

2-coin set

$185/set

250,000 sets

~220,000 sets

~88%

2024-S

2-coin set

$215/set

262,500 sets

149,346 sets

56.9%

2025-S

2-coin set

$215/set

160,000 sets

124,276 sets

77.7%

2026-P (Morgan)

Individual

$173/coin

250,000 coins

158,647 coins

63.5%

2026-P (Peace)

Individual

$173/coin

250,000 coins

145,095 coins

58.0%

Three things stand out from the data.

Total coins moved. The 2023 set sold roughly 220,000 sets in its first four days, which translates to about 440,000 individual coins. The 2026 launch moved 303,742 coins. On a raw coin count, 2023 still wins. But 2023 buyers had no choice: you had to buy both coins. Some percentage of those sets were bought by collectors who only wanted one of the two dollars.

The demand decline reversed. From 2023 to 2025, opening-period demand dropped every year. The 2024 opening fell 32% from 2023 in set terms. The 2025 opening fell another 17%. The 2026 release broke that slide. In total coins, the 303,742-coin opening represents 22% more coins than the 2025 opening (124,276 sets = 248,552 coins). Individual sales, the Philadelphia mint mark, and the Semiquincentennial markings all contributed to the turnaround.

Morgan outsold Peace by 9%. This is the first year collectors could vote with their wallets on which design they prefer. The Morgan drew 158,647 buyers against 145,095 for the Peace. The gap is not a landslide, but it tracks with what most collectors expected: the Morgan has deeper name recognition and a larger base of active registry-set collectors.

What Drove the Rebound?

The Mint made three structural changes that worked together.

Individual sales. At $173 per coin, the entry price dropped from $215 (the 2025 set price) to $173 for someone who only wanted the Morgan or only the Peace. Collectors who buy both still pay $346, which is more than the original 2025 set price but less than the $375 the Mint now charges for the repriced 2025 set. The math favors the 2026 coins either way.

New mint mark. Every reverse proof Morgan and Peace dollar from 2023 through 2025 carries an S for San Francisco. The 2026 coins carry a P for Philadelphia, creating a new variety that registry-set collectors need to fill. Variety demand is a real force in this program.

Semiquincentennial markings. The dual date “1776 ~ 2026” and the Liberty Bell “250” privy mark are one-year features tied to America’s 250th anniversary. The 2025 coins do not have them. If the program continues in 2027, those coins will not have them either. For collectors building a complete Semiquincentennial set, the Morgan and Peace reverse proofs are the flagship silver pieces.

Where the 2023 Set Stands Today

The 2023-S Reverse Proof set launched at $185 and nearly sold out its 250,000-unit cap, ending at roughly 247,820 sets. That was the high-water mark for the program in both velocity and total sales.

Three years later, the 2023 set trades at roughly $135-$225 on the secondary market in raw (ungraded) condition. That means most buyers who paid $185 at launch are sitting at or near break-even. Certified examples tell a different story: PF70 coins graded by PCGS or NGC with First Day of Issue labels trade for $250-$400 per coin, well above the $92.50 per-coin cost of the original set.

The lesson from 2023 is that the modern Morgan and Peace program rewards grading. Raw sets have held value but not generated meaningful appreciation. Certified top-pop coins have done better, driven by the same registry-set demand that pushes premiums on other modern Mint products.

The 2024 set ($215, 262,500 cap) has also traded near or modestly above its issue price. The 2025 set ($215, 160,000 cap) is still available from the Mint at $375 after a mid-year price increase, with roughly 122,000 of 160,000 units sold as of early July.

Early Secondary Market: 2026 Coins

It is still early for settled secondary pricing on the 2026 coins. The first shipments started arriving around July 15, and eBay listings for raw coins in original government packaging are clustering around $200-$225 per coin. USA Coin Book estimates the current market value at roughly $225.

At an issue price of $173, that represents a 15-30% flip margin before shipping and fees. That is modest by 2021 standards (when the program launched and early premiums were much higher) but positive for a market that has been cooling on modern Mint releases.

The grading premium story from 2023 will likely repeat. Both PCGS and NGC have announced special labels for the 2026 Semiquincentennial Morgan and Peace dollars. First Day of Issue and Early Release designations at the PF70 level will command premiums. Whether those premiums justify the grading fees depends on what population reports look like once the submission window closes.

The August 25 Question: Enhanced Uncirculated

The reverse proofs are not the last Morgan and Peace dollars in 2026. On August 25, the Mint releases Enhanced Uncirculated versions of both coins from West Point:

The Morgan Enhanced Uncirculated (26XE) and Peace Enhanced Uncirculated (26XH) are priced at $169 each, $4 less than the reverse proofs. They carry a W mint mark, the same Semiquincentennial markings, and the enhanced uncirculated finish that combines laser-frosted and polished surfaces.

For collectors building the complete 2026 Morgan and Peace set, the August 25 coins are the next checkbox. For buyers trying to decide between one release or the other, the choice comes down to finish preference and mint mark. The reverse proofs (P) and the enhanced uncirculated (W) will each have their own PCGS and NGC population, and the W mint mark has historically carried a premium in the modern Morgan and Peace program.

The Mint also lists a two-coin Philadelphia set (26XS) at $375 for fall 2026. The finish has not been confirmed, but if it uses a different technique (collector forums have speculated about a “diamond fields” finish), that would add yet another variety to the 2026 lineup.

Between the July reverse proofs ($173 each), the August enhanced uncirculated coins ($169 each), and the fall set ($375), the all-in cost for the complete 2026 Morgan and Peace collection runs roughly $1,059.

What the Comparison Tells You

The 2023 set remains the benchmark. It sold the most units, sold the fastest, and set the pricing floor for the secondary market. But the 2026 coins may age better for three reasons.

First, the Semiquincentennial markings create a historical anchor that the 2023 coins lack. Twenty years from now, the 2026 coins will still be tied to America’s 250th birthday. The 2023 coins are tied to nothing beyond their place in the series.

Second, individual sales mean the Morgan and Peace coins will develop separate collector markets with separate populations. A 2026 Morgan PF70 and a 2026 Peace PF70 are different coins with different demand curves, not halves of a set that gets broken apart.

Third, the Philadelphia mint mark is unique to this year. If the program returns to San Francisco or West Point in 2027, the P mint mark becomes a one-year variety. Variety drives value in numismatics.

Whether those factors translate into stronger long-term appreciation is a question the market will answer. What the sales data tells us right now is that the Mint made the right structural changes. The program had been losing momentum every year since 2023. The 2026 release stopped the slide.

Silver Content and Premiums

Each 2026 Morgan and Peace dollar contains 0.859 troy ounces of .999 fine silver. At a silver spot price near $56, that is roughly $48 in metal. The $173 issue price represents a premium of about $125 over melt, or roughly 260%.

These are collector coins, not bullion products. For silver stackers tracking the best silver prices, a standard American Silver Eagle or a 1 oz silver round delivers more metal per dollar. The reverse proof premium buys you a special finish, a limited mintage, and Semiquincentennial markings that carry numismatic value beyond the silver.

To see how premiums on Silver Eagles have tracked this year, including the premium trends we now show on product comparison pages, visit the Silver Eagle comparison page.

Related Reading

2026 Morgan and Peace Dollar Reverse Proof: Release Guide.
