Rosland Capital LLC, the Los Angeles-based precious metals dealer known for its television commercials featuring actor William Devane, filed for Chapter 11 liquidation<\/a> on July 2, 2026. The filing, made in the US Bankruptcy Court for the Central District of California (Case 26-16650<\/a>), shows a company that no longer holds any precious metals inventory, has terminated nearly all employees, and owes more than $60 million to hundreds of customers who never received their gold and silver.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rosland is not the first precious metals dealer to fail this way. The red flags that preceded its collapse show up repeatedly in this industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rosland operated on a “sell first, buy later” model. When a customer paid for precious metals, Rosland did not ship from existing inventory. The company purchased the metals from third-party suppliers after the customer’s payment cleared. In a flat or declining market, the dealer pockets the spread. But gold rose from the $1,500-$2,000 per ounce range in 2023 to roughly $4,300 by the end of 2025<\/a>, peaking at approximately $5,620 per ounce in January 2026. Silver peaked near $121 per ounce. A dealer buying after the sale faces a widening gap between what the customer already paid and what it actually costs to acquire the metal. Rosland could not close that gap.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The result: a months-long backlog of unfulfilled orders. As of the petition date, Rosland carried $49 million in deferred revenue<\/a> — customer payments for orders it had not fulfilled — and an $11.8 million buyback list of repurchase obligations it could not honor. By late June 2026, the compliance department had received approximately 470 customer complaints, voicemails, and demands, with at least one customer lawsuit already filed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Revenue had fallen from $151.2 million in 2021 to $97.8 million in 2025. Gross margins compressed from 18.4% to 8.7%. Net losses exceeded $24 million between 2022 and 2025. The company’s marketing relied on nationally televised commercials featuring William Devane, who had been its spokesperson since 2012<\/a>. Rosland also partnered with golfer Phil Mickelson on commemorative coin products. Its largest listed creditor is Fox News Network LLC, owed $1.9 million<\/a> — likely for advertising. Nineteen other unsecured creditors, owed a combined $21.6 million, were redacted in the court filing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rosland’s product mix leaned toward numismatic and collectible coins rather than standard bullion, with premiums of 30-50% or more over melt value. Those premiums funded the TV campaigns, but they also meant customers paid far more than the metal’s intrinsic value<\/a>. When those customers tried to sell, the resale market priced their coins closer to melt — not the inflated retail price they originally paid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

High-pressure sales and unsolicited calls.<\/strong> Court filings in both the Rosland and Lear cases describe sales representatives who urged customers to liquidate retirement accounts into precious metals.
