Johnson Matthey stamped on vintage bars that command collector premiums. Asahi on the modern bars poured at the same refineries JM built. And now, new JM-branded poured bars showing up on dealer shelves for the first time in a decade. Here’s what connects them and what it means for your stack.

Johnson Matthey: 200 Years

Percival Norton Johnson opened as a gold assayer at 79 Hatton Garden, London, in 1817. He did something no other assayer was doing — he offered to buy back the bars he stamped, backing every piece with his own reputation.

George Matthey joined in 1851. The firm became Johnson & Matthey. A year later, they were appointed official assayer and refiner to the Bank of England. For the next 160 years, JM bars carried instant global recognition: LBMA Good Delivery accredited, COMEX deliverable, accepted everywhere bullion trades hands.

By the mid-20th century JM had expanded into catalytic converters, specialty chemicals, and platinum group metals. But in December 2014, the company announced it was selling the gold and silver refining division. JM had evolved into a sustainable technology firm — catalysts, battery materials, hydrogen fuel cells — and the refining business no longer fit.

The buyer was Asahi Holdings of Japan.

The Asahi Acquisition

The deal closed March 5, 2015. Asahi paid £118 million (~$186 million) for JM’s refining businesses and two facilities:

Salt Lake City, Utah — JM’s American refinery, producing bars for the U.S. market.

Brampton, Ontario — JM’s Canadian operation outside Toronto, which also handled investment casting (now Niagara Investment Castings under Asahi).

About 340 employees transferred. The equipment stayed. JM’s London Good Delivery accreditation followed the refineries to Asahi. What changed was the logo — Asahi introduced its sunrise mark on all new production.

Asahi Holdings (now ARE Holdings as of 2023) was founded in 1952 in Tokyo. Core business: precious metals recycling from industrial waste, electronics, dental materials, and jewelry scrap. The JM acquisition gave them a direct retail bullion presence and LBMA accreditation in North America — something they didn’t have before.

In 2019, Asahi also acquired the assets of bankrupt Republic Metals Corporation in Miami, adding a Florida minting facility that received ISO 9001 certification in 2021.

Asahi Bars Today

The same workers who poured JM bars on March 4, 2015 poured Asahi bars on March 6. Same refineries, same processes, different stamp.

Silver bars (.999 fine):

Size

Type

FBP Product Page

1 oz

Minted, serialized

Compare prices

10 oz

Minted

Compare prices

1 kilo

Cast

Compare prices

100 oz

Cast, serialized

Compare prices

Gold bars (.9999 fine):

Size

Type

FBP Product Page

1 oz

Minted, in assay

Compare prices

Silver rounds (1 oz, .999 fine): Buffalo, Freedom Liberty, Liberty Bell

Beyond the standard lineup, Asahi produces themed pieces like a Lunar Dragon silver bar and an American Reserve gold bar made exclusively from U.S.-sourced metal. They launched a fractional gold bar line in 2024.

Asahi premiums run comparable to Sunshine Minting or SilverTowne — consistently lower than Swiss refiners like PAMP or Valcambi. The LBMA pedigree is there, but the Asahi name doesn’t command a brand premium. For stackers focused on ounces per dollar, that works in your favor.

Find the lowest-premium silver bars →

Vintage JM Bars

When JM exited refining in 2015, the supply became permanently finite. That scarcity — plus 200 years of reputation — created a collector market. Vintage JM silver bars carry 10–30% premiums over spot silver depending on size, condition, and design generation. JM used several logo variations over the decades, and certain eras are more sought after.

JM Bars on FindBullionPrices

Product

FBP Page

1 oz JM gold bar

Compare prices

10 oz JM gold bar (poured)

Compare prices

100g JM gold bar (cast)

Compare prices

1 kilo JM gold bar

Compare prices

10 oz JM silver bar (struck)

Compare prices

10 oz JM silver bar (secondary)

Compare prices

100 oz JM silver bar

Compare prices

1 kilo JM silver bar

Compare prices

1 oz JM platinum bar

Compare prices

Authenticating Vintage JM Bars

JM bars are heavily counterfeited. Three things to check:

Serial numbers should be stamped (pressed into the metal), not laser-engraved. Counterfeits often have engraved serials or skip them entirely.

Logo era should match the production date. JM used several logo styles over the decades — a 1980s logo on a bar with a 2010 serial is a red flag.

Weight and dimensions — verify with a precision scale and calipers against published specs. Off-spec dimensions are the most common tell on fakes.

The simplest defense: buy from dealers who authenticate secondary market inventory and offer return policies. The product pages linked above compare prices across vetted dealers.

New JM-Branded Bars from CNT

New silver bars carrying the Johnson Matthey brand and logo are back on dealer shelves — but they’re not made by Asahi.

These bars come from CNT Precious Metals (CNT Minting), a U.S.-based refiner that has revived the JM brand identity on new-production silver. The licensing details aren’t public, but the bars are sold as new condition at major dealers.

Size

Type

FBP Product Page

5 oz

Poured

Compare prices

10 oz

Poured

Compare prices

1 kilo

Cast

Compare prices

100 oz

Cast

Compare prices

The 5 oz and 10 oz poured bars have been moving fast. Poured bars have a handmade character that minted bars lack, and the JM name on a poured bar hits a sweet spot between vintage collectibility and modern availability. Several major dealers are carrying them, priced competitively with other branded bars.

Three Categories, One Name

The supply chain distinction matters:

Vintage JM bars — produced by Johnson Matthey pre-2015. Finite supply, collector premiums, authentication required.

Asahi bars — produced at the former JM facilities under Asahi’s brand. LBMA Good Delivery, competitive premiums.

New JM-branded bars — produced by CNT Precious Metals. New production, classic JM branding, poured and cast formats.

Who Should Buy What

Most ounces per dollar: Asahi. LBMA pedigree, modest premiums, global acceptability. The brand doesn’t carry PAMP or Engelhard cachet, but the metal is the same .999 fine silver at lower cost.

Vintage collectors: Original JM bars, especially poured pieces from the 1970s–80s. Supply only tightens from here.

Character and value: The new CNT-produced JM poured bars. You get the JM name and the handmade aesthetic without vintage collector premiums.

Just want silver: All three work. Premium differences on 10 oz and 100 oz bars between these brands are usually a dollar or two per ounce.

Compare silver bar prices across all brands →

Browse all Johnson Matthey products on the JM mint page and Asahi products on the Asahi mint page.

New JM-branded poured bars showing up on dealer shelves for the first time in a decade.
